Purloined pastries embarrass Seahawks rookie Golden Tate

Golden Tate Shure Marple Bars

Seahawks rookie wide receiver Golden Tate said Tuesday he was “very embarrassed” after police in the Seattle suburb of Renton, Wash., gave him a warning for trespassing into a gourmet doughnut shop at 3 a.m. last weekend.

Tate, a former Notre Dame star, said it was a foolish mistake and he is glad to have learned a valuable lesson without getting arrested.

He said a friend took a couple of maple bars from the shop, which is on the ground floor of the building in which Tate lives.

“They are irresistible,” Tate said of the pastries.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said he has talked to Tate and agrees that maple bars can be irresistible.

More NFL: Carolina restricted free agent Thomas Davis signed his one-year, $3.268-million tender hours after he appeared to tweak his surgically repaired right knee. The starting outside linebacker had been participating in optional workouts under an injury waiver. He fell to the turf while backpedaling and grabbed the same knee in which he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in November. Davis walked off the field but didn’t return to the practice. A team spokesman says Davis was undergoing tests. …

The Buffalo Bills signed rookie offensive lineman Kyle Calloway, a seventh-round draft pick (216th overall) from Iowa.

Basketball: A 22-year-old man accused of posing as a high school student and basketball player in West Texas has been indicted on six felony charges, including sexual assault and tampering with government records. Ector County District Attorney Bobby Bland said the indictment also alleges Guerdwich Montimer committed identity theft.

Montimer, using the name Jerry Joseph, played basketball at Odessa Permian High School, whose football team inspired the book “Friday Night Lights.” He led the Panthers to the first round of the playoffs last season and was named the District 2-5A Newcomer of the Year. That honor was stripped in recent weeks, and the Panthers forfeited their 16 wins.

Suspicions were raised a few months ago after coaches at an amateur basketball tournament said they recognized Joseph as Montimer, a 2007 graduate of a Florida high school and a naturalized U.S. citizen from Haiti.

Bland said the two counts of sexual assault pertain to alleged attacks on a 15-year-old girl one day in August.

Mickey Gaines, speaking for Montimer’s court-appointed attorney, declined to comment.
